Number Ten * 6 August 2001
Welcome…… It's a few weeks since the last Advantage
Gower so there is lots in this edition. We've been
celebrating the success of our new Painting and Drawing Days, how
surfing has taken off and what
Swansea should be doing to remember the life of Harry Secombe.
I hope that you will have
received a visit from our leaflet droppers - if not ring me on 01792
403333 and we'll get some out to you.
Just think If your visitors ask you for
places to go do you hand them the Pembrokeshire leaflets or those closer
to home? Every visitor you send to Folly Farm or Oakwood Park
potentially stays next year in or around Tenby. Keep them in Gower and
Swansea - there's plenty to do!
Also
inside - Learn to Paint and Draw - Special
Offer for you and your visitors
Although Foot and Mouth is
now
a back page issue it's interesting to see that the blood tests for the
cattle slaughtered at Skewen have mysteriously disappeared! The
slaughter of 6,000 healthy sheep (Logic - if you've had
Measles you don't catch it again or pass it on to other people - same
with FMD) on the Beacons has signalled the death knell of hill
farming and put tourism into a further downward spiral - thank you
Butcher Blair and the media!
We are continuing to list open and accessible attractions
in the area as well as details of Foot and Mouth (FMD) and the effects on Swansea and Gower on our
website.
Whatever the weather Advantage Gower
will continue to bring useful information to help
us all win and maintain visitors throughout the year. We welcome feedback so that we can provide
just the right amount of information to encourage visitors to come to
the area and stay longer once they have arrived.

By the time this edition is out we should
have a couple of new horses at Clyne Farm. Melody who was featured a few
weeks ago with stable manager Kevin has proved difficult to get into a
horsebox! Did I hear anyone say anything about being a typical woman??
Also due is Olivia - a 16.1hh shire cross with a great temperament
| This is Puzzles
who is the smallest pony that we have. She is a lovable Shetland in
the Thelwell mould and is ideal for the smaller rider. Check out
Puzzles'
details on our web
site.
Full details of our hacks and lessons are on our web
site as well as pictures of the horses and staff.

Learn
to Paint and Draw
Jean and Rachel have proved
to be a great success with their painting and
drawing courses both for adults and children. With a wealth of subjects
around the farm there is never a shortage of subjects.
Each course, whether for a
day or a week, covers the
basics of drawing, sketching and watercolour painting of a
variety of subjects around Clyne Farm. Depending on the weather this can
include buildings, animals, sea and landscapes. Like every course at
Clyne Farm it will be
conducted in an informal atmosphere.
The normal cost is £40 per
day but we're offering it to participant providers and their guests at a
special price of £35 per day or £150 for
the week. Ring us on 01792 403333 as soon as possible to book places.

Dump of the
Week
This week
it's the whole of Swansea - not just for it's sloppy attitude to
presenting the City to visitors but the people - you and me - who
should be ashamed about what we have not done in remembering and
paying tribute to Harry Secombe.
So far the
city council have held a brainstorming session to decide what to do.
That is not leadership but abdication. What could have happened - but
it's too late now - is a summer Cymantha Ganu in St Helen's Ground. Pack
it with 10,000 people and do what Harry enjoyed - sing and enjoy.
And
then..... promote tours of the city to see places of interest to fans of
Secombe, Zeta Jones and Tyler. It would fill buses with the odd place
over for those few Dylan Thomas buffs who visit the city.
Gong
of the Week
Alex
Frith for her get up and go in organising a tribute to Harry Secombe.
Alex's shows at the Grand Theatre are all well worth the effort of
attending as they are full of young people who enjoy entertaining.
| Did
you know? Challenge Valley has a world wide
reputation and is the most used location for the tv programme
You've Been Framed (which means lots of £250 cheques for our
visitors with video cameras). It's used by over 15,000 people a
year ranging from management training groups, school and youth
parties, birthday parties. |
This youngster from Dunraven School in London
takes an early bath on
the Commando Pole. Sixty pupils and staff visited us in July and stayed at Swansea
Institute's Townhill Campus - one of our partner organisations |
Why
not? Take a walk through Clyne Gardens and continue up to Clyne
Farm Centre for the best view in Swansea.
Try Clyne Farm's coffee shop - the first turn after
the gardens is Westport Avenue. Follow Westport Avenue to its highest
point and you will see the sign for Clyne Farm Centre on your right.
Follow the sign through the houses and the Centre is ahead of you. The
Office and Coffee Shop are on the left of the farmhouse. We have a new
cook called Lisa ready to welcome you with good coffee and food.
WALK
OF THE WEEK
Everyone
does Rhossili but I really think that Three Cliffs has the most stunning
scenery. The easiest walk is from Southgate along the tarmac path where
you can drop down into Pobbles. If the tide is out there is a short walk
along the beach before you go under the arch to return up Pennard
Valley. The walk up to Pennard Castle is a bit of a slog (heavy storms
in the 17th century created the dunes and covered the medieval church
just inland from the castle) but worth it for the bird's eye view of the
meandering river.
The return
route can follow footpaths along over the golf course or back to East
Cliff. Toilets and good coffee at Pennard Stores are a reward for a
breathtaking afternoon.
