Welcome…… after the false dawn of Easter it looks as
if visitors are starting to return to Swansea and Gower. However, having
spent some time recently in Mumbles I just wonder what they they will
make of what is supposed to be the jewel in Swansea's tourist crown.
It is just plain tatty - and I don't mean
the bus station particularly but....
- take a look at the area where the buses
stop and turn opposite the boarded up L'Oila restaurant. Perhaps the
Swansea Bay Festival could invest some of its £400,000 in a lawn
mower, some street furniture and information boards.
- while you are there try and work out
which way the buses go. People tell me that some buses marked City
Centre set off in the direction of Newton and arrive at their
destination an hour later.
- there are no buses to Limeslade between
about 4.00 and 6.30 in the afternoon. Just to add to the confusion
the bus number changes.
- a lot of resources seem to have been
concentrated on the patch of grass opposite the Coop (the so called
village green) but take a look
at the bowls pavilion - this must be the biggest turn off for locals
and visitors alike. It leans sadly and is crying out for a coat of
paint.
- Who is allowed to play bowls? I don't
know because there is no information to tell you. All I know is
people like a relaxing game of bowls or tennis when they are on
holiday.
As a gesture towards improving the look of
this eyesore Clyne Farm Centre will donate £50 worth of paint to
whoever is responsible. Isn't it time for some
civic pride in the city?
Did then FA Cup Final bring many people to
the area? We had a group of Arsenal supporters staying. They saw a lot
of Mumbles but mainly from the inside of the pubs!!
We are continuing to list open and accessible attractions
in the area as well as details of Foot and Mouth (FMD) and the effects on Swansea and Gower on our
website. See
below how you can help a campaign for compensation.
Whatever the weather Advantage Gower
will continue to bring useful information to help
us all win and maintain visitors throughout the year. We welcome feedback so that we can provide
just the right amount of information to encourage visitors to come to
the area and stay longer once they have arrived.

Thought of the Week There
continue to be isolated outbreaks of Foot and Mouth Disease. This is
carried by people, animal movements or the natural transfer through the
animal population. Because the disease is clinically difficult to spot
in sheep the latter is likely which means that there must be thousands
of sheep that have been infected - FMD is, therefore, endemic in Great
Britain!!!
Compensation
for Businesses Affected by FMD
The City and County of
Swansea are administrating the £350,000 of the £12M the Welsh Assembly
have made available to businesses affected by FMD. Forms can be obtained
from Frances Jenkins, Corporate Marketing and Tourism Manager at County
Hall.
Action Foot and Mouth is
an organisation set up by a group of businesses mainly from the more
affected areas of Cumbria and Devon who are looking to take on the
Government over their handling of the situation. See their website at www.action-footandmouth.co.uk
and consider a £10 membership to help their cause to Action Foot and

Out
and About
It's
good to see the cafe on the front at Rotherslade doing good business
even if the former Osborne Hotel which overlooks it is looking a little
sorry for itself. Langland and Rotherslade are favourites with visitors
and locals with plenty to do from rock pools to sand castle building.
Don't
forget Clyne
Gardens is coming to a peak with the most stunning display of rhododendron and azaleas
collected by Admiral Vivian of Clyne Castle. During May there are
brass band concerts every Sunday and a Red Cross tea tent most days.
If not try Clyne Farm's coffee shop - the first turn after
the gardens is Westport Avenue. Follow Westport Avenue to its highest
point and you will see the sign for Clyne Farm Centre on your right.
Follow the sign through the houses and the Centre is ahead of you. The
Office and Coffee Shop are on the left of the farmhouse.
