Welcome…… to the first edition of our
newsletter. Advantage Gower is dedicated to providing useful information to help
us all win and maintain visitors throughout the year.
At Clyne Farm we see Advantage Gower as part of our partnership with
tourism and leisure providers strengthening Swansea and Gower's
image as a tourist destination. The emphasis will be firmly on Swansea and Gower as we think that areas to the
west and east of us have more than their share of exposure!
We believe that by working together with
other providers in the tourism and leisure industry we will encourage
visitors to come to the area and stay longer once they have
arrived.
Every edition of Advantage Gower will keep you informed of what is happening at Clyne Farm
Centre.
We will also be making recommendations where your guests (and ours) can go in
Swansea and Gower that will make them want to come back
to the area again and again....

About
Clyne Farm Centre
Clyne Farm Centre is a family run activity and leisure centre
situated on one of the seven hills overlooking Swansea Bay. We
have been running for the past eleven years and have a range of outdoor activities
including archery, indoor climbing, orienteering, horseriding, climbing and abseiling, gorge walking, rock hopping, caving, canoeing and
Challenge Valley - the muddiest assault course in the world!!!!!
Our visitors are typically families, youth groups, unaccompanied children and even top executives on management training courses.
They come for full or half day activities (Details)
or to holiday in our very popular self catering
cottages. Details
Adopt a Pony Days
Whilst FMD has restricted horseriding to our own land
we have just followed the lead of Clyne Golf Club and started limited
re-use of Clyne Common. Adopt a Pony days continue to be very popular as
they are a great way for parents to have some time to themselves while the children
come to us and look after a pony for a day.
Full details of our hacks and lessons are on our web
site as well as pictures of the horses and staff.
Foot and Mouth Disease
We've kept a close watch on FMD since the outbreak was first reported
The amount of misinformation that is put out by the media is quite
alarming. The official news is well presented on the Welsh Assembly
website and, if you search, you might find something at the Wales Tourist Board. The most balanced views, from
both tourism and farming, are from Peter Kindersley's Berkshire organic sheep farm (www.sheepdrove.com).
We've tried to provide a concise review of FMD and the minimal effect it has had on Swansea and Gower on our
website. We have also complied a list of
open and accessible attractions.
We've had to take precautions such as keeping people away from susceptible animals (Susie and Louie the Welsh miniature spotted pigs, Gizmo and Billy the pygmy goats) and
we haven't used Clyne Common which, at this time of year, is full of new born lambs.
Thought Common land is used as supplementary grazing. If all animals were moved back to their home farms the spine of Gower would be a natural 'firebreak'. Let
us know what you think or any other
"burning" issue.
Walk of the Week
I've always liked Langland Bay. The cliff path between Gower's most commercial beach and Caswell Bay has been described as the finest coastal walk in Europe. If your visitors start at Caswell they can also have a cup of tea and a bun at Phil
Cobley's beach side café.
The walk (about 1.5 miles) is fairly easy along the tarmac cliff path but a bit of a struggle for a wheelchair. An alternative is Bishop's Wood -
its visitor centre is the garish yellow and green building on the left as you approach Caswell from Mumbles.
There are toilets at both Langland and Caswell. Look out for distant views of Oxwich Point and Ilfracombe across the channel on a
very clear day.
Eating Out
The King Arthur Hotel at Reynoldston (tel
01792 390775) is in the heart of the Gower Peninsula. Len O'Driscoll runs a comfortable country pub with
a large variety of beer on tap, good bar food and a restaurant (best to book) which has an emphasis on fresh produce and sea food.
Suggest to your guests that they round off lunch with a bracing walk along Oxwich beach.
