Number Eleven * December 2001

Welcome…… It's a few months since the last Advantage Gower so there is lots in this edition. We've also been busy with Father Christmas staying at the farm since the beginning of December. Over one thousand children have visited him so there should be plenty of tidy bedrooms and angelic children between Kidwelly in the west, Ammanford in the north and Cowbridge in the east! Some have their pictures in our new Photo Gallery so why not take a look?

Merry Christmas and an Active New Year!

Our attractions page has proved highly popular and by the Spring we will have more information from our partner companies to make our  website the information hub for what to do in Swansea and Gower.

Whatever the season Advantage Gower will continue to bring useful information about the area throughout the year. We welcome feedback so that we can provide just the right amount of information to encourage visitors to come to the area and stay longer once they have arrived.

Clyne Farm's self catering operation is going independent the quest to provide visitors with an even bigger and better service.

As Clyne Farm's Geoff Haden explains "Nearly 60% of our bookings have been self generated with the internet being an important source of new visitors.

"We've rejoined the Wales Tourist Board grading scheme which gives us a recognised quality standard and a benchmark from which to improve our service. By booking direct our visitors can deal with our friendly trained staff who can quickly answer questions about the cottages and what is available at the Centre and the surrounding area.

Early Booking Discount  There are big incentives for booking made before the end of January 2002. These can be held for a reservation fee of just £50 with a 10% discount on all bookings made before the end of January.

As many as 40% of our bookings are made in the first month of the year so it's a chance to not only get the property you want, at the time that you want it but also to save money in the process

Riding

Much has changed at Clyne Farm Stables since the summer. Lots of new horses and a new yard manager - Christine Stanton. Chris - a local girl - is aided by Erika who is from Brighton.

They are responsible for Father Christmas using Tiggi and the Victorian trap to get around (see picture above) in the mild Swansea climate while Rudolph and the reindeers rest up for the big day.

Carriage driving is a great way to get around - why not take some lessons - Tiggi is the most forgiving of teachers!

This is Ginny who is the largest horse that we have. She is a shire cross and like her near twin Tom she has a great temperament and is ideal for the beginner. Check out Ginny's details on our web site

Full details of our hacks, lessons and Adopt a Pony Days are on our web site as well as pictures of the horses and staff.

Computer Viruses - Have they hit you?

A month ago we were hit by a computer virus. It beat our anti-virus software which had only been updated a month before (now we update every week!). The BadTransB virus sends e mails to everyone on your address book so if it hit us it may have hit you. Apart from clogging up the system it doesn't do much else - not apparently like other viruses.

According to the BBC it was started by BTOPENWORLD who accidentally sent it to its customers.

Someone has told me you can download free software at www.grisoft.com

It's very clever but why don't these geeks put their talents to productive use?

Dump of the Week

Regular readers will remember that we have been a bit cutting in our remarks in the past. That will not change but as it is the season of goodwill we'll hold off for a week or two!

Gong of the Week

There is a wind of change in the Wales Tourist Board following Butcher Blair's near annihilation of the rural economy with the Foot and Mouth farce. Visitors to Swansea, Mumbles and Gower will see the benefits of the area having Strategic Tourism Status and a massive new WTB advertising campaign - The Big Country - with one of the television adverts featuring Rhossili and Worm's Head.

However, all this could pass the area by if the tourism industry (and that means just about every business in the area) does not present a strong lobby similar to that being mounted in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.

Did you know? Challenge Valley has a world wide reputation and is the most used location for the tv programme You've Been Framed (which means lots of £250 cheques for our visitors with video cameras!). It's used by over 15,000 people a year ranging from management training groups, school and youth parties, birthday parties.

ITV's phone dating programme Dial a Date is the latest to use the Challenge Valley mud. They brought Welsh Valleys girl Dannielle and Sussex boyo Simon together for a surprise date. They were great sports and we fixed them up with dinner at Castellamare on Bracelet Bay as a reward.

Why not?

  • Take a walk along Swansea Beach and marvel at the peace and solitude just minutes from the bustling city. Just remember to go to the loo before you start as loos are few and far between. More are promised in the rebranding of Swansea into a "must visit" destination (consultants talk for "you'll never get anyone here unless it's easy to Park, Pee and have a Pint"!

  • Try Clyne Farm's coffee shop - drop the children off for a ride and sit and watch the view for an hour.

CHRISTMAS GREETINGS - THE BIG POSTCARD

We've been running The BIG Weekend for ten years now so can tell WTBs The Big Country campaign a thing or two about size! Our latest offering is The BIG Postcard site. Not that it's very big at present but we aim to expand it into a site where you can send pictures by e mail of almost everything in Swansea and Gower. Forgotten to send a Christmas card? Why not send a BIG Postcard NOW!
