Challenge Valley
Welcome…… last week I highlighted the tatty state of
parts of Mumbles - the so called jewel in Swansea's tourist crown - and
this brought so much response that we'll continue with a regular Dump
of the Week but will also give a Gong of
the Week for those parts of the area that will be good for our
guests to visit.
| Meet five
year old Rachael from West Cross in Swansea. Her birthday wish was
granted this week at Clyne Farm Centre. There's a clue in the picture
but to find out what that was check out Riding
and Adopt a Pony Days. |

Offer for you and your visitors
Although election prize
fighting seems to have taken precedence in the media area parts of
Swansea and Gower are still closed to visitors because of Foot and
Mouth. We are continuing to list open and accessible attractions
in the area as well as details of Foot and Mouth (FMD) and the effects on Swansea and Gower on our
website.
The Western Mail has been
carrying articles about the lack of bedspaces for the Ryder Cup bid in
2001. WTB's Jonathan Jones is talking about going as far afield as
Bristol. As far as I know he hasn't been as far as Swansea - does he
think people are going to be put off by the 30% commission that the
organisers are demanding?
Whatever the weather Advantage Gower
will continue to bring useful information to help
us all win and maintain visitors throughout the year. We welcome feedback so that we can provide
just the right amount of information to encourage visitors to come to
the area and stay longer once they have arrived.

Riding and
Adopt a
Pony Days
| Rachael Maddock,
a pupil at St David's Primary School in West Cross has always wanted
to ride a horse. Just before her fifth birthday her dream came true
when she rode Sparky - one of the smaller ponies at Clyne Farm Stables
over Clyne Common on her first riding lesson. Check out Sparky's
details on our web
site . Happy Birthday Rachael |
 |
Rachael comes for a half hour
lesson after school - perfect for the warmer evenings for children and
adults. Adopt a Pony days continue to be
very popular as they are a great way for parents to have some time to
themselves while the children come to us and look after a pony for a
day.
Full details of our hacks and lessons are on our web
site as well as pictures of the horses and staff.
Learn
to Paint and Draw
Next week during half term we
are offering a great opportunity to learn drawing and watercolour
painting. The course is over five days - Monday 28 May to Friday 1
June.
The course will cover the
basics of drawing and sketching and look at watercolour painting of a
variety of subjects around Clyne Farm. Depending on the weather this can
include buildings, animals, sea and landscapes and the course will be
conducted in an informal atmosphere.
The normal cost is £35 per
day but we're offering it to participant providers and their guests at a
special price of £25 per day or £100 for
the week. Ring us on 01792 403333 as soon as possible to book places.

Dump of the
Week
Lat week we
highlighted the disgusting state of the bowls pavilion at Oystermouth
and even offered £50 worth of paint to help clean it up. We've had a
Mumbles resident offer to help rub the woodwork down but, as yet, nobody
claiming ownership of this eyesore.
This week
we move around the coast and award the Dump of the
Week prize to Limeslade. Plunch Lane
is a monument to bad planning but the area that visitors see is around
the bay. It's dominated by broken or non-existent fences and a general
air of being the poor cousin to Bracelet Bay (see next item).
Gong
of the Week
The
area around Castallemare in Bracelet Bay shows what can be done in good
hard landscaping. The children's play area has a variety of swings and
play structures. The only criticism is that at busy times small children
can wander off so you have to keep your eyes open.
The
play area plus Castallemare, toilets, lifeguard patrol and a big car
park have made Bracelet so much better to visit - great for sand and
rock pools (Send people this week as the tide is out most of the day) Well
done, City and County of Swansea. Unfortunately
you have now set yourself a high standard to follow at other beaches!
There's
still time Visitors that we send to Clyne Gardens come back
amazed with the most stunning display of rhododendron and azaleas
collected by Admiral Vivian of Clyne Castle. Try Clyne Farm's coffee shop - the first turn after
the gardens is Westport Avenue. Follow Westport Avenue to its highest
point and you will see the sign for Clyne Farm Centre on your right.
Follow the sign through the houses and the Centre is ahead of you. The
Office and Coffee Shop are on the left of the farmhouse.
